How to Take Care of Your Silver Jewelry

How to Take Care of Your Silver Jewelry

Silver is a beautiful and durable material, but like any precious metal, it needs a little care to keep its original beauty over time.

At INSIEME, many of our pieces are handcrafted, which means that small variations and signs of the handmade process are part of what makes each jewel unique. With proper care, your INSIEME jewelry can stay beautiful for many years.

Why does silver change over time?

Silver naturally reacts with substances in the environment and can gradually become darker or lose some of its original shine. This process, called tarnishing, is completely normal and does not mean that your jewelry is damaged.

Perfume, cosmetics, sweat, humidity, and certain chemicals can accelerate tarnishing. Fortunately, in most cases, tarnished silver can be gently cleaned and restored.

Everyday care

To keep your silver jewelry in good condition:

  • Put your jewelry on last. Apply perfume, creams, makeup, hairspray, and other cosmetics before putting on your jewelry, and allow them to dry first.
  • Remove jewelry before showering or bathing. Frequent exposure to water, soap, shampoo, and other products can accelerate tarnishing and may affect some finishes.
  • Take it off before swimming. Chlorinated and salt water can affect silver and other materials used in jewelry.
  • Remove jewelry before exercising. Sweat and friction can contribute to tarnishing and wear.
  • Avoid contact with household chemicals. Cleaning products, detergents, and other chemicals can damage or discolor silver.
  • Handle your jewelry gently. Avoid pulling, bending, dropping, or applying unnecessary pressure, especially to delicate or handcrafted pieces.

You don't need to worry about the occasional accidental splash of water. What matters most is avoiding prolonged or repeated exposure.

How to clean silver jewelry

For ordinary, unpainted silver jewelry, gentle cleaning is usually enough.

  1. Use a soft, clean, non-abrasive cloth to gently wipe the surface.
  2. If necessary, use a small amount of mild soap diluted in lukewarm water.
  3. Rinse carefully with clean water.
  4. Dry the jewelry completely with a soft cloth.
  5. Store it only when it is completely dry.

For more persistent tarnishing, a silver polishing cloth specifically intended for jewelry can be used gently on plain silver surfaces.

However, be careful with polished, oxidized, plated, textured, or otherwise specially finished pieces. Excessive polishing can gradually alter their appearance.

Never use abrasive materials, rough brushes, or aggressive cleaning products on your jewelry.

Special Care for Hand-Painted Jewelry

Some INSIEME pieces feature details that are hand-painted with acrylic colors. These pieces require additional care because the painted surface is different from the silver underneath.

The paint is intended to remain beautiful with normal wear, but it can be scratched, rubbed, softened, or removed by excessive friction, water, chemicals, or cleaning.

For hand-painted pieces:

  • Keep them dry whenever possible.
  • Remove them before showering, swimming, exercising, or doing household chores.
  • Keep them away from perfume, cosmetics, creams, oils, detergents, and cleaning products.
  • Do not use silver polishing cloths on painted areas. They are designed to polish metal and may gradually wear away the paint.
  • Never use silver cleaning solutions, polishing compounds, alcohol, acetone, or other solvents on painted surfaces.
  • Do not scrub, brush, or rub the painted areas.
  • Avoid storing painted pieces where they can rub against other jewelry.

If your hand-painted jewelry needs cleaning, use a very soft, dry cloth and gently wipe the surface. If a little more cleaning is necessary, lightly dampen the cloth with clean water and carefully wipe the painted area. Do not soak the jewelry.

Afterward, dry it immediately and thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Be especially careful with friction

Even when the paint itself remains intact, repeated rubbing can gradually change its appearance.

Try to avoid wearing hand-painted pieces while:

  • sleeping;
  • exercising;
  • carrying heavy bags or objects that may rub against the jewelry;
  • working with your hands;
  • wearing other jewelry that repeatedly touches the painted surface.

Small signs of wear may naturally appear over time. They are part of the life of a handmade, hand-painted object, but gentle handling can significantly slow this process.

How to Store Your INSIEME Jewelry

Proper storage is just as important as cleaning.

When you are not wearing your jewelry:

  • Keep each piece in a clean, dry place.
  • Ideally, store pieces separately so they do not scratch or rub against each other.
  • Keep hand-painted pieces away from objects that could scrape their surface.
  • Avoid bathrooms and other areas with high humidity.
  • If possible, keep jewelry inside an airtight or well-sealed jewelry pouch or container.

A soft jewelry pouch is particularly useful for preventing scratches and unnecessary friction.

A final tip

Silver jewelry is meant to be worn and enjoyed. Some changes over time are completely natural: silver may tarnish, surfaces may develop small signs of wear, and handmade pieces may acquire subtle marks from their journey with you.

With a little care and attention, however, you can preserve the beauty and character of your INSIEME jewelry for a long time.

Treat it gently, keep it clean and dry, and give each piece the care that a handmade object deserves.

Thank you for choosing INSIEME.
